Dear Grade 2-4 Parents,

On Wednesday September 7, 2011 we will be visiting Oakland’s Chinatown as part of our unit on migration. The essential questions for this trip are:
  1. How is Oakland Chinatown different or similar to other parts of Oakland/Bay area?
  2. From where have many of the people who live and work in Oakland Chinatown migrated?
  3. How has migration changed Oakland?
  4. How has migration changed people from Oakland as well as people who have moved to Oakland?

We will leave the school at 9:00am and return before 2pm. We will take the Bart from North Berkeley to the 12th Street Station. Students will need to bring a clipper card, Bart card, or about $5 to buy a Bart ticket. Students should also bring about $5 for lunch. We will eat at Shandong Restaurant. A detailed itinerary of our activities in Oakland Chinatown will be sent home on Tuesday afternoon.
Please take note of the following things to bring (chaperones should also bring the same items for themselves):
  1. Cap and/or sun screen
  2. Shu Ren T-shirts (let me know if your child doesn’t have a Shuren T-shirt)
  3. Comfortable shoes for walking
  4. Long pants to prevent morning chills
  5. A sweater or windbreaker to keep warm if necessary
  6. An umbrella and rubber boots if the forecast is rain (we will go rain or shine)
  7. A Bart card with at least $5 on it, or $5 cash to purchase a Bart card.
  8. $5 for lunch at Shandong Restaurant
Optional:
  1. A disposable or inexpensive camera/camera-phone
  2. A few dollars (no more than $5 for shopping in the market)
We are very excited about this field trip and if you would still like to chaperone all are welcome!
Warm Regards,Nathan & Patricia
